7th & 8th HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT CLASSES:
Spanish Level 1 is divided into Part 1 - taken in 7th grade and Part 2 - taken in 8th grade. One high school credit is received for successful completion of both Part 1 and Part 2. Successful means a student's final grade is 60% or above. If a student's final grade is less than 60% at the end of 7th grade, he/she will not be able to continue into Part 2 in 8th grade. If a student's final grade is less than 60% at the end of 8th grade, he/she will have to repeat Spanish 1 at some point in high school. If a student does not pass Part 1 at the end of 7th grade, their grade will NOT appear on the high school transcript. However, if a student takes Spanish Part 2 in 8th grade, no matter what their final grade is, whether passing or failing, their final grade from 7th grade AND their final grade from 8th grade will BOTH be recorded on the high school transcript. The final grade will NOT factor into the student's GPA in high school, but it will be on the high school transcript, which goes to prospective colleges.
At the end of 7th grade and 8th grades, students take an End of Year exam. The results of this exam count for 25% of the student's final grade. His/her classroom grades for the 4 quarters count for 75%. The exam is the same one given to high school students in 9th-12th grade. The new test format was implemented in May 2018. Four skills are tested: speaking, writing, reading, listening. Each skill counts as 25% of the grade. The speaking and writing portions are administered in class during the later part of May. The listening and reading portions are administered on a day set by the district in early June. Students are encouraged to work hard throughout the year to keep their grades up, to help achieve a high final grade once the exam is factored in. Review of material will take place in May.
The 7th grade EOY covers the material in units 1 and 2.
The 8th grade EOY covers the material in units 1-4. The exam is cumulative, including material from 7th grade as well as 8th.
